PROMPT GUIDE

How to Write FLUX Prompts (in Natural English)

FLUX is an image generation model that follows your intent better when you write natural English in the order subject, look, action, place, light and art style, rather than listing Danbooru tags. This guide covers the order for building sentences and how to rewrite a tag prompt.

Last updated: approx. 3 min read

The short answer

Write FLUX prompts as natural English sentences rather than lists of tags. Go in the order subject and action, look, composition, place, light, art style, and describe the state you want instead of what you do not want. Put short text in quotation marks to render it.

Tags or sentences for FLUX prompts?

Natural English sentences are the default. Joining who is doing what and where into sentences makes your intent clear.

FLUX is known as an image model with a strong understanding of text. So instead of listing tags like "1girl, long hair, smile", a sentence like "A girl with long hair smiles at the viewer" carries positions and relationships (who is doing what) better. There are several model variants and tools, and the rules can change, so check the documentation of the environment you use.

What order should a FLUX prompt follow?

Subject and action, then look, composition, place, light and art style is an easy order to manage.

Steps to build a FLUX prompt in English

  1. Write the subject and what they are doing in one sentence
  2. Write the look (hair, eyes, outfit) in a second sentence
  3. Write the composition (where it is seen from and how big)
  4. Write the place and the things around it
  5. Write the light and time of day (evening, backlight and so on)
  6. Finally, write one art style (anime illustration, watercolor and so on)
A young woman with long black hair and red eyes sits by a large window, looking outside with a calm smile. She wears a cream knit sweater and a red ribbon in her hair. Medium shot from the waist up, eye-level. A small quiet cafe with wooden tables and plants. Soft afternoon light from the window. Anime style illustration with soft colors.
A girl in a white sailor school uniform walks along a riverside path lined with cherry blossom trees, petals drifting in the wind. Wide full-body shot from a low angle. Clear blue sky, bright spring morning light. Clean anime illustration with crisp lines.

Illustration usage rules

What works well and what does not

Style of writingHow well it worksNotes
Specific colors and objects (a red ribbon in her hair)Works wellPair the color with where it is
Actions as sentences (she holds an umbrella)Works wellCarries relationships better than tags
Elements written earlyWork stronglyPut important things first
Negative sentences (no hat)WeakDescribe the state you want (bare head, etc.)
(word:1.5) emphasisDoes not work in some environmentsUse wording (vivid, soft) for strength
Many style wordsTends to get muddyNarrow it to one style

Rinka's tips

  • Write what should happen, not what should not. If you do not want a hat, do not mention hats; describe the hairstyle instead
  • Longer prompts pin down more detail, but keep the important elements in the first half
  • Do not repeat the same meaning. Saying it clearly once is enough

How do you put text in an image with FLUX?

Put the short text in quotation marks and say where it is written.

FLUX is known as relatively good at rendering short text inside images. Put the text in quotation marks and say where it appears (a sign, a T-shirt, a book cover). Long sentences and small text go wrong more often, so start with short words.

A cozy bakery storefront with a wooden sign that reads "BAKERY" in white hand-painted letters, a girl with a red ribbon standing beside the door and smiling, warm morning light, anime style illustration.

Unwanted things appear or it looks like a photo? (FLUX fixes)

The usual causes are negative sentences and a weak art style description.
