Unify the image with a theme color

Limiting the number of colors on screen instantly makes it feel like a finished piece. Once you pick a theme color, the trick is to scatter shades of it across the hair, clothes, background and light.

What makes an image feel "emo" (nostalgic and emotional)?

  • Time of day: golden hour / twilight (evening light is the color of nostalgia)
  • Color: warm colors + muted colors (warm, yet a little lonely)
  • Motifs: power lines, train station, rooftop (everyday life x sky)
  • Effects: film grain, chromatic aberration, lens flare (a filter of memory)

Rinka's tips

  • Use only 1-2 color palette tags. Using pastel colors and vibrant colors together is a contradiction
  • You can extract and analyze the actual colors of a finished illustration with Color Palette Extractor
  • Once you find your own winning palette, lock it in as a template to give your work a series feel

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

My colors are messy and don't come together.

The colorful elements (background, clothes, hair) are each competing for attention. Rein in the whole image with limited palette or a theme color tag, and lower saturation with muted colors to tidy it up.

I want a dreamy-cute (yume-kawaii) image.

The standard four-tag set is pastel colors, dreamy, soft focus, light particles. Adding motifs like clouds, stars, ribbons or bunnies makes it even more convincing.

Is there a way to find out my own color tendencies?

Load your favorite images you made into Color Palette Extractor and it extracts the main colors as HEX codes. Treating the colors that come up often as your theme colors helps unify your style.
